The School of Civil Engineering at NTUA is made up of 4 Departments, providing teaching and research in a wide range of subject areas to over 1,500 students each year.

Set within NTUA’s School of Civil Engineering, the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering is comprised of three world-class Research Laboratories: the Railways and Transport Laboratory, the Traffic Engineering Laboratory, and the Pavement Engineering Laboratory. The role of the Department is to facilitate the Laboratories and help them grow, enabling them to develop their academic direction and strategies.

The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering at NTUA employs 7 Faculty Members, 29 Research Associates, 28 PhD Candidates and 6 Technical and Administrative Staff members.

Established in 1962, the Railways and Transport Lab at NTUA performs R&D and Educational activities in the areas of transport modeling, public transport, freight transport, railway infrastructure, maritime, airports, and intelligent transportation systems.

The Laboratory staff consists of 2 Faculty Members, 3 Emeriti Professors, 1 Laboratory and Teaching staff member, 1 Senior Researcher, 1 Laboratory Technical Staff member, and 5 PhD Candidates.

Job Description

The Railways and Transport Lab is looking for research and development personnel for the European Project SEAMLESS SHARED URBAN MOBILITY (SUM), with starting date ASAP. The duration of this project is 3 years.

The Railways and Transport Lab is the Technical Coordinator of this Project, covering 13 countries and consisting of 30 partners from Europe and Israel. It also leads WP1 related to the specifications and needs of the 9 Living Labs of the project (Penteli, Geneva, Krakow, Jerusalem, Rotterdam, Larnaca, Munich, Coimbra and Fredrikstadt).

The consortium involves 7 Large corporations and medium-sized companies (SIXT, FREENOW, SIGMA6, SIEMENS, CON, NBIKE, ZF), 2 SMEs (MOBY and HYKE), 2 Non-profit organizations (ERTICO and POLIS), and 9 Academic and research organizations (INRIA, VEDECOM, TUM, NTUA, TAU, JU, CHALMERS, TUD, UT).

Its objective is to increase the share of Shared Modes by 25% and contribute to the climate neutrality goal of the living labs by 2030. It is one of the most challenging projects in EU, aiming to transform 9 cities into climate change leaders by showcasing the impact of best practices.

The postholder responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the development of Key Performance Indicators for the Living Labs
  • Co-creation Activities
  • Liaising with the municipality of Penteli and Freenow
  • Developing planning tools for the physical integration of public transport and shared modes (mobility hubs)
  • Developing algorithms for the scheduling integration of public transport and shared modes
  • Participating in networking events and engage in activities to disseminate research findings within the academic community and beyond
  • Publication of the project’s results to Scientific Conferences and Top-tier Scientific Journals
  • Project management and close collaboration with the partners of the consortium
  • Providing guidance and support to students pursuing their BSc and MSc degrees, including supervision and teaching responsibilities

  • 2 Senior (Postdoctoral) Researchers
  • 1 PhD Candidate
  • 1 Research Associate

Eligibility

  • BSc and MSc Title or 5-year Diploma in Engineering
  • Proven Knowledge of English (English is the working language)

Required Knowledge

  • Transport Planning
  • Mathematics and Operations Research
  • Modeling and Computer Programming (Python or Matlab)
